Vikings best Briercrest in home opener

With great anticipation, the Briercrest College Clipper hockey team kicked off the 2019-20 season at home revealing a new look, new coaching staff and new team.  Player instructions and captains reveal preceded game one of the week-end against the perennial contenders U of A, Augustana Vikings.  
 
The Vikings struck first just 1:01 into the opening frame with a goal from #96 Jared Houde. The remainder of the period was quiet with one penalty a side by the end of the period.  Shots after 20 minutes was 13-7 for Augustana.
 
The second period was uneventful with a solid pace.  After successfully killing a penalty to new defenseman Jamieson Ree, the Clippers were unable to keep the Vikings from scoring late in the period.  On a boarding penalty to Clippers Captain Josiah Friesen the Vikings got one past goaltender Dan Dekoning.  At the end of the period it was 3-0 for the visitors.  Shots for the period were a lopsided 17-4 for Augustana.
 
There were opportunities for the Clippers early in the 3rd with three power plays awarded.  The team was unable to get on the board despite pressure in front of the net and doubling their shots on net. Intensity picked up as time went on however it was only the Vikings who managed to score 2 more goals and a 5-0 final score. The Clippers outshot the Vikings 10- 9 in the final 20 minutes.  
 
Player of the game Augustana was #96 Jared Houde with 2 goals and #14 Trey Doell for Briercrest, a newly named assistant captain and fan favourite.  
 

The two teams face off again tomorrow, Saturday at 2:00pm at the Barkman Arena in Caronport, SK.
