Briercrest bounces back in second game
Game two of the weekend match between the Augustana Vikings and the Briercrest Clippers opened with greater intensity than last night. End to end action, breathtaking saves and big hits kept the fans on the edge of their seats on Saturday afternoon in Caronport, SK. After one penalty a side, the Clippers were finally able to crack Augustana's goaltender Curtis Skip and scored two goals within a minute to end the period. Goals came from freshman Jarrett Marks and 2nd year Josh Boelema. Shots were 12 -10 in favour of the home team.
The second period saw an early goal, set up by #19 Austin Kozluk, for the visiting Vikings sending an early message that they were here to play. A couple minutes later they tied up the game however the Clippers' captain answered back with a goal of his own to retake the lead before the period ended. Shots were 19- 9 for Augustana and just one power play for Augustana in the middle frame.
The final 20 minutes proved to be the most exciting! Josh Boelema scored an unassisted goal for his second of the game, giving the Clippers a 4-2 lead. He was hauled down later, awarded a crowd pleasing penalty shot but was unable to get the hat trick. Augustana pressed hard and Travis Mayan was rewarded with his second goal of the game, narrowing the gap 4-3. The visitors withstood the only penalty of the period and shutt the door on the Clippers from there on out. Despite pulling their goaltender, calling a time out and maintaining pressure on Clipper netminder Dan Dekoning, they were unable to get the tying goal in the final minutes and the home town team took the win. Shots were 10 for the Clippers and 18 for the Vikings in the final period.
Players of the game were #22 Travis Mayan for the Augustana Vikings and #18 Josh Boelema for the Briercrest Clippers with 2 goals each today.
