LAC LA BICHE – Hopes and dreams turned to despair and nightmares for the Portage College Voyageurs on Friday night at the Bold Center. A hockey game that started out so promisingly ended in bitter disappointment for a determined but snake-bitten home squad, who lost 9-2 to Grant MacEwan.
The Voyageurs battled the three-time defending champion Griffins hard during the first half of the game, even taking a 2-1 lead five minutes into the second. The celebrations were short lived, however, as the visitors showed why they are the champs, scoring the equalizer 14 seconds later.
From there, the tide noticeably turned, with MacEwan coming at the home team in waves and flooding the Voyageurs' net with goals, including five in the third period. Cameron Reagan led the way, notching his sixth of the season and adding three helpers, on his way to a player of the game award. Kona Jackson played a strong game for Portage and was named player of the game for his squad.
A few Voyageurs were noticeably frustrated as the game wound down, smashing their sticks against the boards after the last couple of goals against. Associate Coach Kevin McClelland understood the anger but also appreciated the passion and effort his players continue to exhibit during this tough season.
"The boys played hard tonight and gave it their all," he said. "They just ran out of gas in the third."
