The SAIT Trojans men's hockey team now face an uphill battle as they dropped Game 1 of the opening round of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) playoffs to the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings.
Though no goals were scored in the opening frame, there was plenty of action between the Trojans and the Vikings. While the Trojans controlled play in terms of zone time at even strength, they got into some penalty trouble late in the period.
First was Brendon Borbely who took a penalty for boarding, and soon after Taden Rattie got a two-minute minor of his own for goaltender interference. Thanks to some big saves from goaltender Trevor Martin, the Trojans were able to kill off both. At the other end of the ice, Daniel Moody was able to kick aside all 11 shots he faced.
The Trojans came out in the second and once again controlled play for the majority of the period, but were once again unable to find the back of the net. Moody was incredible, making several highlight reel saves including a fantastic glove stop on Rattie.
Austin Kozluk opened the scoring in the second for the Vikings on a goal that Martin had no chance on. Moments later they were able to capitalize again, this time shorthanded on a great shot from Lane Kirk that beat Martin on the glove side. The second came to an end shortly after, with the Trojans trailing 2-0 despite holding a commanding 28-14 lead in shots.
The third period saw the Vikings come out much faster than the first two frames, as it was clear they gained confidence with their lead. Martin made several big saves to keep his team in the game, but the Vikings were eventually able to extend their lead on a rebound that was put home by Zack Cox. They were soon after able to put home on empty netter on what was Cox's second tally of the period to put them up 4-0, which would end up being the final.
Despite tonight's loss, there were plenty of positives for them to take, as they dominated play through the first 40 minutes. Picking up Player of the Game for the Vikings was Moody, who stopped all 35 shots fired his way. For the Trojans it was Kaden Hanas, who was flying around all night and had plenty of opportunities but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Trojans will look to even the series up and extend their season tomorrow afternoon at 3pm against the Vikings in Camrose, Alta.
