LAC LA BICHE - The Portage College Voyageurs came into Saturday's game against SAIT looking for redemption from Friday night's results. Just like the game on Friday night there was an early penalty assessed and this time the Voyageurs had the powerplay and were able to capitalize on the opportunity with a goal by Shaye Sommerfeld.
The game marked the fourth time the Voyageurs faced off against the Trojans and like the other three this wone was fast paced and physical. The first period went back and forth with each team trading chances in a penalty-filled period. Shots on goal were tied at sixteen and the Voyageurs led 1-0 at the end of the period.
In the second period the Voyageurs jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Blake Astorino and Brody Dale. The Trojans were able to capitalize on some momentum they had earned after a couple late penalties by the Voyageurs and scored with just 17 second left in the period on a goal from Dylan Clark. Voyageurs held a 3-1 lead in the game but SAIT had the lead in shots 31-27.
In the third period it was edge of your seat hockey with the teams trading goals. SAIT reduced the deficit to 3-2 with a goal by Brandon Machado less than two minutes into the third. The Voyageurs responded back with two straight goals by Conner Grunsten and Logan Spence. At the halfway point the Voyageurs now had a comfortable 5-2 lead but SAIT didn't quit. They answered back in the next six minutes with goals from Tye Carriere and Brett trentham.
The last four minutes of the game had the teams trading chances but the score held with Voyageurs winning the game 5-4 even though they were outshot in the game 45-39.
The Voyageurs will try to build off of the win and inch closer to a playoff spot when they face off against Augustana Vikings in a home and home next weekend.
