BRIERCREST CLIPS VOYAGEURS’ OFFENCE IN SHUTOUT WIN
LAC LA BICHE – They played a strong defensive game but unfortunately for the Portage College Voyageurs, their offence was as cold as the frigid temperatures outside. Dominic Tmej made 22 saves and Trey Doell and Cole Stevenson scored as the Briercrest Clippers shutout the host Voyageurs 2-0 on Friday night at the Bold Center. Halen Cordoni added an assist and played a strong game to nab Player of the Game honours for his squad.
"That team right there, they come and they play hard. They hit, they take the body and stuff like that," said Portage Head Coach Kevin McClelland after the fast-paced, entertaining game. "We played well enough defensively. Both goals were glaring errors but again, one night we score eight goals and then we go out another night and we score seven goals but we can't get nothing tonight. Their goalie made some pretty good saves and we had a couple of good looks but we really didn't do a lot offensively tonight."
The Voyageurs killed off six penalties and kept the grade-A scoring chances to a minimum – thanks in part of Portage Player of the Game Greg Parker – but couldn't generate enough offence of their own to build off of their stellar defensive effort. Despite the loss, McClelland appreciated both teams' efforts. He's just hoping for a different result when the same two teams wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon.
"There were a lot of hits, a lot of stuff like that…That team worked hard tonight," he said. "We worked hard too but we just didn't do enough to get it done."
