Bukuru, Wandyka help Kodiaks tame Broncos

Sept. 29, 2018 – An early goal from Jimmy Bukuru and key saves from Kohl Wandyka helped the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men's soccer team to a crucial 1-0 win over the visiting Olds Broncos on Saturday.

Lethbridge applied pressure early and often, and finally broke through in the 20th minute thanks to a nice rush started by the speed of Wilson Ntignee.

Ntignee broke down the left side and placed a hard shot on Bronco keeper Ryan Murphy. While the initial save was made, Bukuru smartly crashed the net and found the loose ball, putting it home for a 1-0 lead.

Olds actually outshot Lethbridge 13-10 in the first half, and made things tense for Kodiaks supporters once play resumed in the second half.

Desperate for the equalizer, Olds controlled most of the possession down the stretch and nearly tied the game on numerous occasions. A remarkable fingertip save from Wandyka helped the Bukuru marker hold up as the game winner, with the Kodiaks bench breathing a sigh of relief once the final whistle blew.

Lethbridge (3-2-1) will now head to Calgary tomorrow for a clash with SAIT, currently ranked the best team in the country. The Kodiaks will be eager for revenge after a 3-2 loss to the Trojans at home on opening day, a game that saw Lethbridge concede two late goals. Kick-off is set for 2 p.m.

With the loss, Olds drops to 2-4-1 and will look to salvage a weekend split when they head to Medicine Hat to take on the Rattlers. That game is also slated for a 2 p.m. start.
