MSOC | Kodiaks Comeback to Tame Broncos 2-1
Sept. 19, 2021 - Jaden Veluw and Charlie Block delivered a pair of memorable second half goals, helping the Lethbridge College Kodiaks men's soccer team to a comeback 2-1 victory over the visiting Olds College Broncos on Sunday afternoon.
After dropping the opener of their six game season on Friday against Red Deer, the Kodiaks entered the match knowing they had little room for error the rest of the way.
Returning to the friendly confines of Servus Centre Outdoor Field for the first time in nearly two years, the Kodiaks were determined to feed an energetic and vocal crowd with a fast start.
Instead, it was the Broncos who quieted the crowd of nearly 200 spectators early.
Off a free kick from Jackson Schulz-Kingsley, it was Said Khalil who tapped home a loose ball to give the visitors an early 1-0 advantage.
Both teams fought tooth and nail for each touch on the ball throughout the remainder of the half, with little in the way of chances. Easton Beaulieu and Wilson Ntignee both had close calls off of fantastic individual efforts, but were stymied by Broncos keeper Parys Ona MacArthur.
With a determined effort to start the second half, the hosts finally broke through in the 54th minute.
Off a corner delivered by Ben Knight, Jaden Veluw placed a perfect header into the corner to draw the game level.
Then, a moment of brilliance from a Kodiaks rookie delivered them the game winner. Charlie Block, playing in just his second game as a Kodiak, delivered a rifle of a shot from roughly thirty yards out to give the Kodiaks a lead in the 68th minute.
It was a lead they would not relinquish, thanks to strong team defence that allowed just one Olds College shot on target in the second half.
Kodiaks rookie goalkeeper Ethan Demers was strong in the win, making five saves.
The Kodiaks (1-1) will now prepare to take on the Medicine Hat Rattlers at home next Friday, Sept. 24. First kick is set for 5 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Broncos (1-1) will prepare to host Red Deer Polytechnic in the first half of a weekend home and home next Saturday, Sept. 25.
