Lions Fall to Kodiaks in Four Sets

Lions Head Coach Paul Armbruster said after the game, "We've gotta be a little bit more consistent to get to the spot we need to get to…but there were definitely some positives that we can take away from tonight."

Mental errors kept the Lions from starting strong out of the gate, while the Kodiaks consistently kept pressure on the home team from the service line and the net.  Mike Hummel, Kodiaks Player of the Game, registered 11 kills and 4 blocks over the match and was a big part of his team's offensive success. The first set ended at 25-14 for the Kodiaks.

The second set was more of the same; although the Lions limited more of their unforced errors, the story of the set and the entire match was the smothering defense and blocking of the Kodiaks. 5th year outside Keaton Strom found more offensive success as the game went on, scoring 13 kills on the night, while Ambrose setters Jacob Reid and Ryan Andres each added 9 and 4 kills respectively. Andres was the Lions Player of the Game, also contributing 19 assists, 2 digs and one service ace.

Down two sets to none, the Lions finally found their groove in the third and stretched out a comfortable lead. Unforced errors from the Kodiaks and improved play from the Lions found the home team up 21-14 late in the set, and a kill from rookie middle Brayden Nowosad at 24-19 forced a fourth set.

The Lions kept the score close until the middle of the fourth set, when a string of overpasses sent the Kodiaks on a 5-0 run and gave them the lead they would maintain for the rest of the set. A kill out of the back row by Kodiaks captain Dax Whitehead, his seventh of the night, would seal it up for his team at 25-20.

Ryan Andres remarked after the game that "We kinda came out flat, we really need to come out strong as a team, especially with all these great fans that came out and provided so much energy…I think there were positives to pull from it for sure, from the systems we were running and the way we played, so we'll pull from that and we'll go into tomorrow as a fresh team."

Tonight the Lions go up against the Kodiaks in Lethbridge, starting at 8:00 PM following the women's game. Tune in on acactv.com if you can't make it to Lethbridge, as Ambrose will look to put themselves in the win column.
