MVB | Kodiaks pick up win in home opener
Oct. 19, 2018 – In a battle of undefeated teams, it was the Kodiaks who fed off the crowd and emerged victorious.
Huge performances from Dax Whitehead, Carter Hansen and libero Matt Primrose helped the Kodiaks secure a huge 3-1 win over rival SAIT Trojans.
The game was best described as an "early season" affair for both teams, with multiple prolonged service runs on both sides. Lethbridge the first set 25-22, punctuated by a huge slam from middle Michael Hummel.
The Trojans rallied in the second set, maintaining a lead almost the whole way through. The Kodiaks rallied from down 18-14 to make it 19-18, but the Trojans took six of the next eight points to tie the match at one set a piece.
Feeding off the energy from the large crowd at the Val Matteotti Gymnasium, the Kodiaks used great blocking to propel themselves to a quick 8-3 lead in set three. Using long service rallies, the advantage grew to 21-12 and then 25-15, putting the Kodiaks on the verge of a win.
The fourth set went down to the wire, with the teams tied at 24. The Trojans fended off one Kodiaks set point, but couldn't fend off the second. With the score 25-24, a huge dig from Matt Primrose and a block from Matt Hummel secured the Kodiaks victorious home court debut.
The Kodiaks (3-0) and Trojans (3-1) will clash again tomorrow night, with first serve set from Calgary at 8 p.m.
