Broncos lose in three to Lethbridge

Olds College Broncos men's volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-19) to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in the Broncos Olds College Student Appreciation Game Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Ralph Klein Centre.

The Broncos got to an early 2-0 lead and held on to the two point lead until Lethbridge took a 6-5 lead. The Broncos took a timeout when Lethbridge took a 9-6 lead. Lethbridge was able to gradually extend their lead but the Broncos were able to cut the lead to 16-15. A 22-17 Kodiaks lead forced another Broncos timeout, but Lethbridge took the set 25-17.

Jesse Stoddart came in at libero to start the second set for Olds. The Broncos jumped out to a one point lead and the teams kept exchanging points and the lead until Lethbridge took a 7-5 advantage. The teams continued to go back and forth with Olds taking a timeout at 10-8 for Lethbridge. Thundersky Walkingbear had a powerful kill after a rally out of the timeout to break the Lethbridge run, but Lethbridge got the ball back on the next play. Lethbridge extended their lead to 15-11 before Ryzen Walkingbear pounded the ball through the Lethbridge blocks. The Broncos called a timeout at 18-12 for Lethbridge. Walkngbear had a kill out of the timeout to end the Kodiaks momentum. But, Lethbridge extended their lead to 24-16 before the Broncos went on a mini run to make the score 24-20 before falling 25-20.

Lukas Dragicevic kicked off the third set with a thunderous kill for the Broncos leading the Broncos to early momentum that led to a 2-0 lead. Lethbridge built up a 5-2 lead forcing a Broncos timeout. The teams then went back and forth with teams exchanging points but the Lethbridge lead not changing by more than a point. The largest lead that Lethbridge was able to build was to win the third set 25-19

Player of the game for Lethbridge was Zach Wikenheiser with a game high 23 assists to go with three aces and the Pit Barbecue Player of the Game for the Broncos was Jesse Stoddart with a team high 13 digs.

Lethbridge held the advantage in kills 35-19, assists 32-17, service aces 16-2, digs 51-41 and blocks 9-7. Thundersky Walkingbear had a team high five kills, Thomas Puglaset had a team high 13 assists and Ryzen Walkingbear had a team high two blocks for Olds.

The Broncos host Red Deer College Thursday, Nov. 7 for the Olds College Staff and Faculty Appreciation Games. Game time is 8:00 pm.
