MVB | Kodiaks Very Own Breaks ACAC All-Time Kills Record
Nov. 22, 2019 - The Lethbridge College Kodiaks men's team looked to extend their winning streak to eight Friday night as they hosted the Red Deer College Kings. Red Deer is 6-2, in third place in the south division. The Kodiaks are ranked eighth in the CCAA national rankings, and they join the nationally top-ranked SAIT Trojans as the only one-loss teams in the ACAC south division.
Fifth year, Carter Hansen of Lethbridge had a record breaking night as he took the title for ACAC's all-time kills record. Hansen sets the record at 1,168 kills, moreover Carter will have the opportunity to lengthen that number as there are 15 games remaining in the regular season.
Lethbridge opened up the match with discipline as they controlled the majority of the first set. Jeremiah Bohnert was a dominant piece for the Kodiaks. Lethbridge fed off the energy Bohnert was bringing to the court, ultimately earning them the set at 25-21.
It wasn't until the second set that Carter Hansen broke the kills record, receiving a standing ovation from a packed Val Matteotti gym. Tension was high for the Kings after the celebration for Hansen as an intimidation factor set in. However, the Kings demonstrated some tenacity in the second set as they attempted to maintain some sort of lead. Eventually, Lethbridge overpowered Red Deer in an exciting second set with a score of 27-25.
The Kodiaks rolled into the third set with momentum. Lethbridge found themselves with a lengthy lead, looking to sweep the Kings. Jeremiah Bohnert of Lethbridge bashed in four kills while record holder, Hansen struck in five kills totaling 15 for the match. As for Red Deer, Carter Hills snuck in four kills in the third set. Conclusively, the Kodiaks swept the match with a final score of 25-18.
Lethbridge will host Red Deer again Saturday afternoon. With this win, the Kodiaks move to an 8-1 record while the Kings fall to a 6-3 stance.
