Trojans cap semester with 5-set win over Kings
CALGARY, ALTA., (Dec. 4) - The SAIT Trojans men's volleyball team lowered the curtain on their first semester in style Saturday night.
The Trojans went the distance in beating the previously unbeaten Red Deer Polytechnic Kings 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 25-27, 23-25, 15-11) in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) matchup played inside SAIT's Campus Centre.
SAIT improves their ACAC South Division record to 4-4, while the first-place Kings fall to 7-1.
The game got off to a rough start for the Kings, who lost all-world setter Maddux Greves on the very first play of the game in his initial trip back to SAIT since helping the Trojans to an ACAC bronze medal in the 2019-20 season. Greves made a play for a ball near the scorers' table, running into it in the process. Sadly, he came out of the game and never returned.
The Trojans were able to take the first two sets of the game in exciting fashion, using the finesse of Filip Florek and power of Ryan Zachary to give them home team a 2-0 head start. Florek led the Trojans with 19 kills, while Zachary chipped in with 17.
SAIT had a chance to close out the match 3-0, much like Red Deer did to them the night before, and had match point at one time. However, the Kings fought back and earned a 27-25 win to extend the match. Red Deer took Set 4 in another close set to tie the match and send it to a fifth and final set.
In the final set, Red Deer got out to an early lead but SAIT stormed back to take an 8-4 advantage before the teams switched sides. Red Deer tried to claw their way back, but their hosts did just enough to keep them at bay and earn the win.
SAIT's Pearce Toal, who came in to the game late to replace an injured Nic Berscht, was named his team's Player of the Game after sealing the victory with a block. Brett Theise earned the nod for the Kings.
