Red Deer Kings Punch Their Ticket to Nationals
The NAIT Ooks took on the Red Deer Kings in the battle of the best. The stakes were high in this match as the winner would be crowned ACAC men's volleyball team of the year and earn their birth into the CCAA National tournament at the end of March. After a close game, the Red Deer Kings win the game 3-1.
The NAIT Ooks started to fly high early in the first set, but this game was not for the faint of heart. The Kings didn't take too long before they came back to tie the game at 11 apiece. The crowd was going crazy on both sides. The Kings pulled ahead, but the Ooks called a timeout to get themselves together. It was a close back and forth battle, but the Kings pulled off the win in the first set, taking it home 25-22.
The second set started off with crazy energy as the Ooks pulled ahead by three, and the whole gym went wild. The Kings weren't backing down, though, and they took the league back before we ended up in a tie at 11 again. The Kings and the Ooks both have some heavy hitters that were stepping up when it counted. The set was tied at 23. The Kings called a timeout to try and calm the play. The Ooks kept it close and managed to pull off the win taking set two 26-24. It was 1-1 after two sets.
The Red Deer Kings started dominating the beginning of the third set. They pulled ahead by six before the Ooks called a timeout. The Ooks were able to come back to be within two before the Kings struck again. Red Deer caught the hot streak and pulled ahead by five, but yet again, the Ooks came back with a vengeance. Ultimately, it was the Kings who took home the third set, 25-22.
The Red Deer Kings dominated the beginning of the fourth set to claim a three-point lead. The Ooks were not going to let that stand, though, as they worked to tie it at 3. The Kings earn back their lead and grow it to a six-point lead halfway through the set. The Ooks claw their way back to tie once again with the Kings, but this time at 24. The set was so close that they had to play extra points. In the end, the Kings won the set 27-25.
