Broncos grab first win of season, split weekend with Lions
The Olds College Broncos broke into the win column on Saturday night, knocking off the Ambrose University Lions in straight sets at the Ralph Klein Centre to earn a split of the weekend doubleheader between the two teams.
For Olds College (1-3), Aidyn Phillips had a productive night with eight kills, two blocks and an ace, while Phillip Sutherland enjoyed an error-free attacking night with five kills; Matheus Franca also posted five kills, paired with six digs.
Nikita Marchenkov led all attackers in the match with nine kills to go with 10 digs, while Noah Verhoef posted eight kills without an error for the Lions (3-3). Defensively, Carter McLenahan posted 12 digs in the losing effort for Ambrose.
All three sets followed a similar pattern, with the Broncos getting out to early leads, then pushing forward to win all three sets by identical 25-16 margins.
Thomas Pugsley (15 assists, three kills, three digs) was named the Broncos' Player of the Game, while Isaac Karstad (four kills) took the honour for Ambrose.
Both the Lions and Broncos will hit the court next on Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. with the Broncos hosting the Keyano College Huskies, while Ambrose will travel to Edmonton to battle the NAIT Ooks.
