The Kings sweep the Vikings three straight
Red Deer, November 4 - It was a packed Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre that featured a match between the home team the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and the North Division University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings. The Kings come into this match after sweeping the two-game series against Medicine Hat Rattlers last weekend. The Vikings come to Red Deer only winning three sets in their six matches so far in what is a very tough North Division.
With a 12-10 lead for the Kings, it was a big solo block from Vikings outside-hitter Devon Nazarchuk on Brett Lower (Bachelor of Science Nursing) which led to the visiting team coming within one of the home team. Lower is last years ACAC South Rookie of the Year. The Vikings would call a timeout after the Kings took a three point but that did not stop the home team from grabbing the next point out of the break. It was quite an exciting 21-20 rally with a big dig from Kings Nicolas Possingham (Bachelor of Arts Psychology). Unfortunately, the Kings lost the point after blowing it out of bounds on the kill attempt. The home team took the opening set 25-23.
Jonah Vanderleek of the Vikings served up the first set with a mishit kill that ultimately landed at centre court for a point for the visiting team. This would lead to a 4-1 run for the Vikings, but the home team stormed back to tie it at five, early in the second set and would take a 7-5 lead going into the Vikings timeout. Before Augustana called their final timeout of the set, Lower came swinging out of the right-side and would give the home team a 16-12 lead. Coming out of the timeout, it was Lower that would get stuffed at the net by a double block from the Vikings. The Kings would take the second set 25-19 with a kill from the ACAC South Rookie of the Year.
The hometown Kings had their crowd cheering in this third set with their offense come out strong against the Vikings. They would go up 20-13 after a kill from setter Maddux Greves (Business Administration General) which would force the Vikings coach to call a timeout for his team. The Kings would continue their offence out of the timeout, leading to a 25-13 victory over the Vikings to take the match 3-0.
The players of the game went to Vikings Devon Nazarchuk and Kings Brett Lower. Nazarchuk finished off his night with nine kills and three digs. For Lower, it was a 15 kill and 3 dig night for his team.
The Kings will have next week off before travelling to Keyano College to take on the Huskies in some more interdivisional matches. The Vikings will also have next week off but the following week they will face off against the South Division Olds College Broncos at home in Camrose.
