Three records broken on opening day of the ACAC Indoor Track Championship
EDMONTON, AB (March 18, 2023) - Hitting the track with speed on day one of the 2023 ACAC Indoor track Championship, presented by the Running Room, three ACAC track records were broken in back-to-back-to-back races to end the night on Saturday at the University of Alberta Universiade Pavilion.
Breaking the first record of the night was the Concordia Thunders Leonard Chesoo in the Men's 1000m race with a time of 2:30.90, breaking the previous record held by SAIT Trojan Matthew Travaglini (2:31.27) set in 2018. Trojan Moktar Said would claim silver, while Lethbridge Kodiak Owen Stewart snatched up the bronze.
Just one race later, the RDP Queens broke their programs own ACAC Indoor Track record from 2020 in Women's 4x200m Relay of 1:56.62 and beat it with a time of 1:50.97. Also breaking the previous record in the same race were the silver medalist, SAIT Trojans with a time of 1:51.56, but it would not hold up against a speedy Queens team. St. Mary's Lightening would claim bronze.
Ending the night with a third ACAC record were the Kodiaks in the Men's 4x200m Relay with a time of 1:35.01, beating the previous record of 1:38.34 set by the MacEwan Griffins in 2020. Following them over the line were the Rattlers in second and the RDP Kings in third position.
The night began with two Medicine Hat Rattlers on the Podium with Rebecca Ross (11:02.84) crossing the Women's 3000m line in first, followed by her teammate Madison Scrimger (11:29.12) in third, sandwiching the Thunders Taylor Chamberlin in the silver medal position.
Chesoo would claim his first gold medal of the evening in the Men's 3000m, crossing the line with a time of 8:36.94. Kodiak Cooper Williams would claim the first medal for his program on the night with a silver medal, while Yahye Jama would get bronze for the Trojans.
Getting the first sprint underway was Queens, Jenica Sawrtz in the Women's 300m race with a gold medal and with just the Men's 300m race to rest and recover, she would later win gold in the Women's 1000m. Trojan Kerigan Frampton and Thunder's Emma Derbyshire would get silver and gold in the Women's 300m, respectively, while fellow Trojan Mckenna Fitzgerald would get silver in the Women's 1000m, with Jasmin Salmon, also a Trojan getting bronze.
Between Sawrtz's two golds, Gunnarr Gibb from the Kodiaks would get gold in the Men's 300m with a time of 36.52, while teammate Orin May would get silver, followed by Trojan Kwasi Oteng Frampong.
