Friday night in Calgary versus Ambrose
Friday night the St. Mary's University women were hosting the cross town rivals Ambrose University Lions. This season has seen both teams having inconsistent play in the first 13 or incase of Ambrose their 14th games. St. Mary's came into the game looking head to continue their path to cliching a playoff spot. On the other hand Ambrose University were playing shorthanded due to injuries. Lions had a short bench of seven players while the Lightning had to play another weekend without Kennedy Burgess.
Lightning started off the 1st quarter with a fast start. The duo of Emily Wagner and Hannah Helton scored 21 of their 23 1st quarter points. It looked like another long night for Lions if this trend had continued. Caitlyn Hetrick and Paige Goertzen had the Ambrose's first 8 points of that quarter.
The Lion Women in the second quarter started to pressure the Lightning at half court with tough defensive pressure and created numerous of turnovers. The managed to hold Helton to 2 points. Ambrose was chipping away but Lightning had a lead of 13 points (33-21). Wagner continue to lead for the Lightning with 6 points.
Aggressive trap from Ambrose University helped the Lions contained their rivals and trimmed the St. Mary's lead to 6 points. Goertzen 9 points lead the short substitute bench with helpers from Danielle Matich and Catarina Dimonekene. Lightning 1st quarter stars were held to 2 points each.
Early in the fourth and deciding quarter, Emily Wagner had received her fifth and disqualifying foul. She left the contest with 20 points in her back pocket. It was time for the Lightning bench to give some offensive help to Helton. Could this have been the turning point that Ambrose was looking to expose. At one point the Lions had a 4 point differential and looking to Goerzten to close the gap further. However the Lighnting offense of Helton and Sydney Deighton were enough to hold them off.
Final score St. Mary's University 62 (8-5) Ambrose University 56 (3-11).
