Overtime needed in the Lightning - Clipper Women's game
St. Mary's University Lightning knew that they would have their hands full against the Briercrest College Women. It has been apparent in this 2018-19 season that the Clipper Women were greatly improved and their results show. It was a typical slow start for the Lightning where they just couldn't solve the Briercrest defence. Their first 17 points were spread around through 6 different players. Meanwhile the Clipper Women held their own with 17 points with 8 players contributing scoring.
The 2nd quarter for St. Mary's which is typically their strongest quarter, but the Clippers had found a way to hold them to 5 points. This would be the Lightning first single digit scoring of the season. Clippers had an 10 point lead going into the 1st half break.
Then the 'star' Emily Wagner (StMU) had a mission to get the Lightning going with 17 points of their 28 point quarter. Clippers were in foul trouble and had to use their bench to give some of the starting five a rest. Briercrest was using their bench effectively and had a lead after 3 quarters of play.
In the fourth quarter, St. Mary's finally got the lead with 6 minutes left. Score was 61-60. Wagner and Hannah Helton were the driving force in getting them into overtime. Helton had 7 points. Joy Victor had numerous of rebounds after Chayle Clark had left the game with an upper body injury. End of 4th quarter ended at 74 points a piece. in that quarter Briercrest's Ambler Tilcox had 8 points
Overtime and 5 minutes of tight scoring action with Helton with 11 points and Adrianna Beck with 7 points for the Clippers.
Coach Shoults quote after the game was 'Whew'.
