Dribbling to a silver medal finish at last year's Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference  (ACAC) women's basketball championships, the Keyano Huskies opened the 2019-2020 campaign with big hopes and big hoops.

Big hoops in that six of the players on the roster stand 5-foot-11 (1.82 metre) or taller.

Last year the teams split their four game series, but it's a new season with plenty of new laces and new faces.

The Huskies combo of veteran 6-foot Moiyan Toure (4th year, Early Childhood Education, Edmonton Alberta) and 6-foot-2 rookie Marijana Besic (College Prep, Belgrade) worked well with Toure posting high and dishing to Besic under the basket for a few baskets.

Foul trouble in the last 90 seconds of the first period allowed the Vikings to stay close down by one 12-11.

Two big three-pointers by Casey Gorieu (2nd year, Business Administration, Stony Plain Alberta) sparked the Huskies to a 27-16 halftime lead.

Huskies athleticism against Vikings patience proved the winning factor in the final minutes of the contest with Huskies securing a 67-49 decision.

Huskies bench came up huge with 26 points compared to 16 for the visitors.

Newcomer Gytonne Everett (3rd year, University Studies, Los Angeles, California) showed some skills at the guard position for the Huskies

Huskies Player of the Game Aliyah Johnson (4th year, Business, Fort McMurray, Alberta) with 21 points. Gorieu added 16 points with Toure getting a double-double with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Vikings POG Tobore Okome (2nd year, Sociology, Edmonton Alberta) with a team high 14 points and seven boards.
