WBB | Kodiaks Unable to Come Through With Redemption
Jan 25th, 2020 - Lethbridge Kodiaks were in seek of redemption Saturday afternoon as they hosted the Red Deer Queens in this back to back home series. After a tough loss Friday night, the Kodiaks had to come out stronger than before as they sit in a tight battle for a playoff spot.
Kirsten Barwegen from the Kodiaks started the game off strong by putting the first two points onto the board within the first minute of the quarter. The Kodiaks were determined to prove themselves from yesterday's lose. Harneet Sidhu of the Queens was not giving up easy as she earned five points for her team. However, first year Natalie Hoyt of Lethbridge buried a deep three just before the buzzer to give her team a four point edge over Red Deer as they would head into the second quarter.
Sandra Garcia-Bernal of the Queens was quick on her feet by successfully carrying out a beautiful layup into the Kodiaks basket, only ten seconds into the second quarter. Following Sandra's momentum, Red Deer took over the lead from Lethbridge by utilizing all their offensive opportunities. The Queens would close out the first half with a score of 42-26.
Red Deer continued to control the game in the third quarter, as they pushed the Kodiaks outside of their key, forcing them to take shots from the outside. The Queens point-guard, Sandra Garcia-Bernal was a powerhouse on the court as she attained ten rebounds and fourteen points within the third quarter. Her domination and control on the court kept her team comfortably in the lead headed into the fourth and final quarter.
The Kodiaks third year, Matlin McmMurray executed a magnificent three-pointer in an attempt to slow down the Queens and potentially take the lead. McMurray brought the level of play up for her teammates which ultimately got them back in the game. Millay Johnson and Emily Greeno picked up a couple of three's as well which then brought them within just a few points of Red Deer.
With multiple time-outs called in the last two minutes, the game could have gone either way. Unfortunately for Lethbridge, they were unable to catch the Queens, falling short by three points.
