After Dominating start, Briercrest edged by Ambrose in Season Opener

Briercrest Woman's Basketball hosted Ambrose University in the Season Opener Friday night on
November 12. The girls opened with a strong offence and a solid defence against Ambrose's aggressive push.
Confident accuracy put the Clippers up 10-0 within the first five minutes, sealing the first quarter
with a 18-7 lead.

In the exciting second quarter, Briercrest had a strong run to gain a 13 point lead again in the first
five minutes. However, Ambrose pushed back to close the gap to a closer 8 point lead in the last
2 minutes. Going into halftime the score is 31-23.

Coming out of half time, Ambrose pressured hard to close the gap as the Clippers and Lions
trade shot for shot. Briercrest responds with a strong defence and some quick steals giving them
hard break aways down the court. In the last 30 seconds, Briercrest gain 6 points. They hold a 7
point lead at 46-39 into the fourth quarter.

In the final frame, Ambrose hammers hard with aggressive plays and well-aimed free throws to
close the lead in the first two minutes. Halfway into the final frame, Briercrest has a 6-0 run
within 30 seconds. The rest of the game was a tense back and forth as Briercrest's defence
struggles against Ambrose's aggressive pressure. Ultimately, Ambrose gained a 7 point lead in
the last minutes of the game to close it out at 64-57.

Player of the game was awarded by Max Summach to Ambrose's Makenna Graham with 14
points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals; and Briercrest's Dori Sunderland for her 13 points, 7
steals, 4 assists, and 1 block.

Player of the game for Briercrest, #9 Dori Sunderland had this to say about her team's
performance: "We're a pretty fresh team, and we came together with a lot of fire. People don't
know what to expect from us, but we definitely have the capability to compete. Third quarter we
got some momentum going and we had some strong plays, but in the fourth, sometimes the shots
just don't fall."
