Clippers Upset Kodiaks in Nail-Biting Showdown

The Briercrest Clippers hosted the Lethbridge Kodiaks in a Saturday afternoon matchup in  Caronport, SK.  

There was good action back and forth from both teams which saw a 5-5 tie. The Clippers gained  9-5 and 11-7 leads each off some fast-break points. Lethbridge battled back to take a 14-13 lead,  and a late basket by Briercrest would give them a 15-14 lead after the 1st quarter. 

Both teams' defenses did not give an inch at either end to start the second, seeing multiple steals on both sides of the ball. With the score at 16-15, Lethbridge called a timeout. Out of the timeout, there was a good momentum swing for the Kodiaks, whose strong shooting saw them pull ahead  21-17. This in turn saw a Clippers timeout called, which likewise, seemed to help them as they  

tied the game up at 21. The Clippers edged out the Kodiaks for a slight 26-23 lead at halftime. 

Out of halftime, the Clippers started strong keeping a 5-point lead through the opening minutes.  The Kodiaks responded, however, heating up from beyond the arc and going ahead 37-32. There was lots of exciting action at both ends of the court throughout the remainder of the 3rd,  with both teams' offenses finding their rhythm. Lethbridge would take a 48-44 lead into the final quarter. 

In the final quarter, both teams came out shooting strong, continuing the high-scoring, back-and-forth tone this second half was set. With the game close at 56-55 and around 5 minutes to play, Briercrest called a timeout. Several lead changes occurred over the next few minutes,  seeing the score always within 3 points for either side. With Lethbridge up 62-60 in the final minutes, Briercrest called a timeout. Out of the break, Briercrest's Brooklyn Martens hit a clutch three-pointer that put ahead of the Clippers up by one, leading to a Kodiaks timeout. Briercrest hit some more critical baskets late and got up 66-62 in the final moments of the game, the Clippers would go on to take down the Kodiaks in a 67-64 upset victory.  

The ACAC player of the game awards were presented to #20 Taylor Ralph of the Kodiaks who recorded 10 points and 1 assist on 50% shooting. For the Briercrest Clipper's the award went to  #6 Melissa Ellis who had 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists.
