Clippers Treat Home Fans to Commanding Victory Over Rattlers

by Jeff Misener

In a matchup of South Division rivals in women's basketball, the Briercrest Clippers (5-7) tipped off against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (0-12). Both squads were eager to launch a win streak as the second half of the 2022-23 schedule amped up and teams jockeyed for playoff positioning.

Briercrest opened the game with smothering defensive pressure; on offense, they scored at will on darting forays to the rim, opening a 13-1 lead. Briercrest forwards Brooklyn Martens and Amber Fichtner dominated the battles for rebounds, while guards Dori Sunderland and Hannah Matuszewski orchestrated a smooth and efficient fast break as the hosts forged a healthy 25-7 lead.

The Clippers continued to attack the rim with great success, and their trapping defense forced countless turnovers. Medicine Hat enjoyed flashes of joy offensively, particularly on midrange shots, but late in the first half, the Clippers connected multiple times from beyond the arc and were full value for their 43-21 halftime advantage.

Madison Beattie opened the third quarter with an open triple, followed immediately by a threepoint play from Fichtner. Medicine Hat's Nylah Seaborn and Mina Djordjevic connected from distance, but Clippers' Sydney Latrace and Eve Duerksen nailed treys to nullify their efforts. Briercrest's trapping defense continued to force the Rattlers into mistakes as the Clippers built a 69-30 lead.

In the second half, many of the Clippers' bench players enjoyed substantial court time, displaying the same defensive tenacity and offensive unselfishness as the starters. The Rattlers' Djordjevic and Brynn Bremner gave strong efforts, but the Clippers sailed to an 85-40 victory in their most complete and comprehensive game of the season.

Player of the Game for Briercrest was Melissa Ellis, whose fourteen points and four assists complemented a superb and stifling defensive effort. Amber Fichtner led Briercrest with seventeen points and eight boards. Mina Djordjevic delivered eight points and five boards for the visiting Rattlers, while Nylah Seaborn paced the visitors with nine points off the bench.
