The Queens make it eight in a row

Red Deer, February 3, 2023 – In this Central Alberta matchup between the Olds College Broncos and the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens, the Queens managed to comeback in the fourth quarter to extend their winning streak to eight games.

Guards Sophie Melin and Lauren France (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) had their shooting shoes on early in the game as they both hit a couple of three-pointers in the first quarter to give their team a comfortable lead. With under five seconds to play, the Queens were up by six but the Broncos guard Odett Schlegl (Business Management) hit a buzzer-beating three-point bank shot to come within three points of RDP as they head into the second quarter.

Guard Rio Yamazaki (Business Management) of the Broncos would tie it up within seconds of the second quarter starting as she hit a three-pointer of her own. Olds College had an impressive quarter as they held the Queens to just 12 points and scored 22 to give them a seven-point lead going into the second half. At the half, Schlegl led her team with 13 points with nine of those points coming off the three-point shot. For the Queens, guard Amy Szymanek and Melin tied for the team lead with 10 points each as once again Red Deer showed off their teamwork abilities.

Schlegl for Olds College continued her impressive game in the third quarter and extended her team lead in points with her sixth three on the night with five minutes left to go. The Broncos were able to extend their lead in the third quarter, putting the Queens seven-game winning streak on the line as they head into the fourth down by 10 points after RDP managed to squeak six points into the final 30 seconds of the third.

With their winning streak on the line, the Queens showed off their adversity in the fourth quarter and made it into a tight game with five minutes left to go in the final quarter. RDP found themselves on the right side of a lead for the first time since the first quarter and was up three points with just under four minutes to play. But that was diminished with a three-pointer from none only Odett Schlegl of the Broncos. But in this tight South Division matchup, the Queens battled back on top after capitalizing on four free throws with under two to play. RDP managed to extend their winning streak to eight games with a 79-71 victory.

The Broncos player of the game went to someone who went seven for 13 from long range and scored 25 points. The Queens player of the game went to someone whose familiar with this honour in Amy Szymanek after scoring 25 points and picking up 10 rebounds.

These two teams will head just a few minutes south to battle in Olds for a rematch tomorrow night at 6 pm.
