Clippers Steal Win Against Lakeland

by Jeff Misener

The Briercrest Clippers and the Lakeland Rustlers (9-8, 4th in North Division) tipped off in a Saturday contest. Briercrest is fresh off a programme-best twelfth victory against a very good Keyano squad and is riding a seven game win streak.

Lakeland converted layups on three successive possessions to start the game, after which both squads endured a stretch of inefficiency. Briercrest guard Tatiana Dyck hit the only three of the quarter as both teams looked to score inside. The Clippers were perfect on their free throws as they secured a 19-15 lead.

A slick give-and-go between Dyck and Brooklyn Martens and a layup from Amber Fichtner sandwiched a triple from Lakeland guard Anika Timmerman. Lakeland stole the lead as Sarah Dacuycuy converted a fast break and-one chance and Paula Ortiz hit a scoop layup. A well-conceived play from the Clippers led to a Sydney Latrace trey just before half, giving Briercrest a 33-30 advantage.

Early inside scoring from Fichtner and Martens was equalled by Lakeland's Kayleena Garda and Timmerman. Though both teams tightened up the interior defense, Martens found space for her second layup and Lakeland's Payton Grindle and Ortiz snuck inside to score. Dori Sunderland's twirling layup was cancelled out by Angela Baran's floater, and a Timmerman's three at the buzzer gave Lakeland a 47-44 edge.

Opening the final quarter, Sunderland and Fichtner traded baskets with Lakeland's Abigail Whitehead and Garda. Briercrest captured the lead on threes by Melissa Ellis and Eve Duerksen before both teams unveiled fresh defensive pressure, which the Clippers conquered first on Fichtner's inside hoop. A steal and score by Rustlers' Bethany Montebon and a pair of jumpers from Susan Ayaa drew the visitors closer. Martens' beautiful euro step restored the home team's advantage. Ayaa and Ellis traded free throws in the waning seconds, and the Clippers endured a flurry of pressure at the end to steal the win, 61-59.

Player of the Game for the Lakeland Rustlers was Susan Ayaa, with 14 points and five rebounds; teammate Anika Timmerman contributed 11 points and five boards in a strong supporting role. For the Clippers, graduating player Jasmine Repetski was honoured. Briercrest forwards Brooklyn Martens (11 points, eight boards) and Amber Fichtner (17 points, 11 rebounds) led the statistical parade.
