RDC’s Wallan named 2019-20 Women’s Hockey Top Scholastic Achiever
Red Deer, AB (March 13, 2020) – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Red Deer College Queens forward Camryn Wallan as the 2019-20 ACAC Women's Hockey Top Scholastic Achiever.
The third-year Bachelor of Education Elementary student received the award as an Academic All-Canadian with the highest GPA. Student-athletes become an Academic All-Canadian if they are selected to the All-Conference team and achieve academic honours.
Wallan applies her persistent work habits on and off the ice. During the Fall Semester, the dedicated learner excelled academically while successfully managing her responsibilities as a Queens alternate captain and leader at Red Deer College, and in the community.
Wallan had a solid campaign on the ice, helping the Queens (15-6-3-0) finish second and earning a spot on the ACAC Women's Hockey Second All-Conference team. She posted five goals, nine assists and 14 points during the regular season, ranking third on the RDC Queens and 13th in the ACAC. The versatile student-athlete from Beaverlodge struck twice on the power play and recorded three game-winners, and played in all situations. In the playoffs, Wallan used her speed to effectively kill penalties and apply a determined forecheck, helping the Queens push the NAIT Ooks to double-overtime in the third game of the best-of-three semi-final.
Queens Hockey Head Coach Kelly Coulter appreciates Wallan's citizenship in addition to her efforts in and out of the classroom.
"Cam has a relentless work ethic. She possesses great leadership characteristics along with her high academic achievements," he said. "Cam treats everyone with respect and is a caring and genuine person. She is always willing to volunteer her time to promote RDC Athletics within our school and community."
Wallan has participated in the First Shift program, which works with individuals who are new to the sport of hockey. As an exceptional ambassador for RDC, she has also inspired and spoken to girls hockey teams about playing college hockey.
