Trojans doubled up in home opener

CALGARY, ALTA (November 11, 2021) – The SAIT Trojans Women's team battled hard in their home opener, but fell short.
The Trojans fell to the Olds Broncos 4-2 in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action played Friday night at SAIT Arena.
The Broncos came out flying to start this game, peppering Trojans goaltender Becca Boswell early in the first period. They were rewarded less than five minutes into the opening frame, as Reegan Broadbent fired home a rebound over the shoulder of Boswell to put her squad up 1-0.
The Trojans didn't back down despite giving up the early marker, and were led by Tamryn Ward who had several great chances but was denied on numerous occasions by Broncos goaltender Cienna Kinghorn. Their persistence eventually paid off however, as Brynn Ferguson took a great pass from Pyper Alexander and was able to slide it past Kinghorn to tie things up.
After many offensive opportunities in the opening period, both teams buckled down defensively in the second. With that being said, both goaltenders still had plenty of action, particularly Boswell who faced 28 shots through the first two periods. She was able to come up big for her team, as things remained tied at one apiece heading into the third.
The first 10 minutes of the third period were the Trojans best of the game, as they had several opportunities to score the go ahead goal but were unable to solve Kinghorn. That proved costly, as just past the midway point of the final frame Hailey Hoogkamp scored on a broken play in front to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
The Broncos poured it on from there, as they were able to put two more past Boswell in just a few short minutes to extend their lead to 4-1.
The Trojans kept on fighting however, and were able to get the score back to within two thanks to a point shot Cassidy Bellavance deflected off of Broncos forward Sydney Jack and found its way into the back of the net.
Unfortunately, that was as close as they would come in this one. With the loss, they fall to 0-1 on the season, but they have a chance to get back in the win column next Saturday as they take on the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton.
