Dunsmore and Queens shutout Broncos at Red Deer Polytechnic
Red Deer, AB - A shutout from first-year goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore helped lift the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens to a 3-0 home win over the Olds College Broncos.
The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens' penalty killing unit was put to the test three times in the opening frame, but it came up successful. The Broncos outshot the Queens 11-3 in the frame.
The home team applied some early pressure in the middle stanza and RDP forward Arilyn Toews drew a penalty, but the Queens couldn't convert. Red Deer Polytechnic reversed the shot margin in the middle frame, testing Cheyenne Jamieson 11 times. Queens goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore turned aside three shots but the game remained scoreless.
With 7:55 left in the third period, the Queens broke the stalemate. On a two-on-one, Arilyn Towes passed it over to Brenna Reid who found open space on the blocker side.
Then 53 seconds later, Braxtyn Shawara raced up the right side and beat Jamieson on the short side with a wrist shot to push the Queens up 2-0. Alesha Santos picked up her second assist of the contest.
On the power play, the Queens went up by a trio. On a goal mouth scramble, Braxtyn Shawara shoveled the puck behind Jamieson with 14 seconds left on the clock. Alli Soyko and Mary Hirsch recorded the assists.
It was Disotell-Dunsmore's first conference shutout and win in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).
Olds College went zero-for-four on the power play. Red Deer Polytechnic connected once on five tries.
Disotell-Dunsmore was recognized as the North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game, turning aside all 25 shots. Jamieson received the top player honour for the Broncos, making 24 saves.
The Olds College Broncos (1-1-0) will be back in action on Thursday, November 25 when they host the NAIT Ooks (1-0-0) at 7 pm.
On Friday, November 26, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (1-1-0) will challenge the SAIT Trojans (0-1-0) in Calgary at 7 pm.
