RDP Queens capture game one against Olds College Broncos
Red Deer, AB – A third period goal from Queens first-year forward Alli Soyko was the difference in game one of best-of-five championship series against the Olds College Broncos.
The Queens and Broncos were even after 40 minutes and then Soyko scored the eventual game winner, providing the Polytechnic with the first victory (2-1) of the final.
The home team opened the scoring on its fourth shot. At 4:09 of the opening frame, first-year forward Natalie Buttle beat Broncos netminder Cienna Kinghorn on the glove side for the early marker.
With 7:54 left in the middle stanza, the Broncos evened the contest on the power play. Maddy Black was stationed in front and redirected a centring pass from Reegan Broadbent past Disotell-Dunsmore on the stick side. Keera Tiringer added the other assist.
At 1:31 into the third period, the Queens took a goal lead. Dylan Norrie made a quick pass to North Star Sports Queens Player of the Game Soyko in the slot and the first-year roofed it under the crossbar. Defender Kassy Gaudette picked up the secondary helper.
The Broncs had a glorious opportunity to even the contest with 4:35 left. Black was in alone on Disotell-Dunsmore, cut cross crease and took a shot on the backhand, but the Queens first-year netminder stretched the right pad and made the save.
Broncos Head Coach Chris Leeming called timeout with 2:58 remaining and then about a minute later Kinghorn went to the bench for the extra skater.
With 1:04 remaining, Olds College went on a six-on-four power play and pressed to score, but Disotell-Dunsmore shut the door the rest of the game.
Disotell-Dunsmore made 17 saves (0.944).
Kinghorn turned aside 25-of-27 shots (0.926).
Hailey Hoogkamp was named the Broncos Player of the Game with a solid effort.
The Broncos went one-for-three on the power play. The Queens couldn't convert on three opportunities.
The Olds College Broncos will host the Red Deer Polytechnic on Sunday at 7 pm in game two of the best-of-five championship series.
