Carothers notches pair to lead Lakeland to inaugural ACAC victory.
The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers and Olds College Broncos met for a Saturday night game in Lloydminster. This was the second game of the season for the Rustlers, who dropped a 3-1 decision to Red Deer Polytechnic last Friday evening while it was the opening game for the Broncos on the 22-23 ACAC campaign.
Things got off to a slow start in period 1. The Rustlers managed to kill off three power play opportunities for the Broncos while Lakeland has one power play opportunity against Olds. Both goalies shut the door on things and the second period started with a 0-0 score. Shots on goal after period one were 6-5 for Lakeland.
The second period definitely had more jump as both teams took advantage of some time in the offensive zone. The Rustlers would open the scoring at the 9:55 mark as Laiken Swan would score her first goal as a Rustler. Assists would come from Mackenzie Stafford and Ellie Baril. The Broncos would respond just under four minutes later as Ali Macaulay would let a shot go from the point through traffic that would elude Mackenzie Dojahn. The teams would head to the third period tied at 1-1. Shots on goal were even in the second period with each team registering 12 shots on Kinghorn for Olds and Dojahn for Lakeland.
The third period was a back and forth affair with both teams having outstanding chances. Kinghorn and Dojahn each made big saves but penalties would cost both teams in the third period. At 6:12, Hailey Carothers would score on the power play with assists going to Mackena Foisy and Mackenzie Dojahn to stake the Rustlers to a 2-1 lead. The Broncos would respond on their own power play opportunity as Hailey Hoogkamp would tie the game six minutes later. Assists would go to Keera Tiringer and Tessa Knisely. Final shots on goal over the sixty minutes of regulation would be 30-27 for Olds.
The first overtime saw no goals as both teams played cautiously with the 4 on 4 ice surface. The Rustlers would get called for a late penalty with eight seconds left in the first overtime that they would have to kill off in the second overtime. In overtime period two, Hailey Carothers would skate out to a breakaway with both teams at 3 on 3 and beat Kinghorn on the backhand to give the Rustlers a 3-2 win. Final shots on goal were 32-32.
Player of the game for Olds College was Cienna Kinghorn while player of the game honors for Lakeland would go to Hailey Carothers.
