The Queens extend the Broncos losing streak with a shutout victory on Saturday
Red Deer, November 12 - Following a weekend where they dropped a 4-1 contest and had their second game against the NAIT Ooks postponed due to travel conditions, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team were back on the ice tonight for a match against the Olds College Broncos.
This happens to be a rematch of last years Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship series, where the Queens would prevail over top of the Broncos with a 3-0 series win and hoist the championship trophy for the fourth time in program history.
The Broncos have yet to win a game this season with their latest loss coming against the NAIT Ooks where they were shut out 3-0. However, they still have a couple of points with two of their games needing extra time.
The home team would be awarded a very early powerplay with the Broncos taking a body-checking minor nine seconds into the game. Olds College was able to kill off the first penalty of the game, but the Queens got two shots on goal on their first powerplay
But a few minutes later, the home team would light up the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre with the first goal of the game. Defense Sarah Raymond (Bachelor of Education) put a shot on net from the blueline and it somehow found its way past the Broncos goaltender for her first goal of the season. Forward Haley Kicia (Bachelor of Arts Sociology) and defence Alesha Santos (Bachelor of Science Nursing) picked up the assist on the Queens opening goal.
On their second powerplay of the period, the Broncos came so close to tying the game. They thought the puck crossed the line, but the referee waved it off as it bounced off both posts before being covered up by Queens goaltender Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce).
Red Deer would get into some tripping trouble and would be put on a five-on-three penalty kill with just under four minutes to play but were able to kill off both penalties.
The period would end with the Queens holding onto a 1-0 lead and would have the edge in shots with seven to the Broncos three.
Nine minutes into the second, the home team would extend their lead to two. It was a shot from the point that somehow stayed out of the net, but Queens forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education Elementary) pounced on the loose puck and would snap it over the pad of the Broncos goaltender. Defencemen Julie Wagner (Bachelor of Science) and Kiera Mulder (Bachelor of Kinesiology) got the assists on Bablitz's second goal of the season.
The second period would end with the Queens leading the Broncos 2-0 and outshot the visiting team 19-7.
Red Deer Polytechnic would capitalize very early on in the third period after they broke out on a two-on-one as they entered the Broncos zone. Forward Brenna Reid (Bachelor of Kinesiology) would one-time home a pass from second-year Natalie Buttle on the Queens third goal of the game 43 seconds into the third frame.
With 10 seconds left to go in the game, forward Alli Soyko was sent on a partial breakaway but was robbed by the left pad of Broncos goaltender Cienna Kinghorn as she stretched out to make the save.
The Queens would walk away with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Broncos. Red Deer outshot Olds College 31-10 in this Central Alberta match.
Broncos captain Jesse Jack and Queens defenceman Sarah Raymond were named the players of the game.
Olds College will battle it out with the SAIT Trojans in Olds week November 17 at 7 pm. Red Deer will face off against the Lakeland Rustlers at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre at 7 pm.
