Trojans fall to Broncos

By SAIT Trojans student writer Colton Pankiw
CALGARY, ALTA (NOV. 19, 22) – The SAIT Trojans women's hockey team lost a hard fought battle to Olds College Broncos on Saturday night.

Less than a minute into their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) game, the Broncos found themselves up 1-0 thanks to a goal from Hailey Hoogkamp. After that opening marker, both teams traded several chances throughout the opening frame, but were denied by solid goaltending from both SAIT's Ali Kieren and Olds College's Cienna Kinghorn. Late in the first, Mikayla Loewen snuck in behind the Broncos defenders and found herself on a breakaway, but was unable to capitalize, keeping it a 1-0 score.

The Broncos began to fell into penalty troubles in the second period, and eventually paid the price, as Kiara Stewart parked herself in front of the net and was able to tie up the game at one apiece while on the two-man advantage. Unfortunately, however, that score was short-lived, as Broncos forward Jerika Pashniak snuck a shot under the arm of Kieren to regain the lead. By the time the horn went to sound the end of the second, the Broncos held a 2-1 lead while outshooting the Trojans 30-16.

The third saw both clubs trade great opportunities. First was SAIT's Tamryn Ward, who missed the net by mere inches on an odd man rush. Moments later, Ward had another great opportunity but was robbed by the left pad of Kinghorn.

Kinghorn continued her incredible play, as just a shift after her huge save on Ward she made another miraculous one on Loewen, who had found herself in alone.

The Broncos ended up being able to hold onto their lead, and defeated the Trojans by a 2-1 final. Both goaltenders were outstanding, as Kieren kicked aside 44 of the 46 shots she faced, while Kinghorn stopped 23 of 24. The Trojans will hope for better results next weekend as they prepare to face the NAIT Ooks back at Winsport Arena.

SAIT's Kiara Stewart and Olds College's Danielle Corrigan were named Players of the Game.
