The Rustlers and Queens force double overtime, Rustlers come out on top

Red Deer, Novemebr 18 - The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens faced off with the Lakeland College Rustlers for the second time in the fall semester. They were able to defeat the Rustlers 4-1 in the opening week of Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) women's hockey action.

The Queens came off a weekend where they defeated the Olds College Broncos 4-0, and the Rustlers came away with a point against the NAIT Ooks in a 4-3 overtime loss which is something RDP could not get done when they faced off with the Edmonton team two weekends ago.

The visiting Rustlers and the hometown Queens remained scoreless after the first period. Lakeland College had the edge in shots with seven and Red Deer Polytechnic finished with five shots in a very tight contested first period.

Another period went by and the Queens, Rustlers were still scoreless. But the Queens came out on top in the shot count and held a 12-10 lead over Lakeland College.

With just over four minutes to go in a scoreless game, the Queens would take a penalty and call a timeout to go over a game plan to shut down the Rustlers. Moments into the powerplay, forward Brenna Reid (Bachelor of Kinesiology) was sprung on a partial breakaway and was robbed by the Lakeland College Rustlers goaltender with the glove as Reid came across the crease and tried to use the backhand.

60 minutes solved nothing which meant a five-minute overtime frame for the Rustlers and Queens. The Rustlers ended regulation with the 25-17 lead in shots and the Queens would end the overtime frame with the only two shots but there were still no goals to speak of. This means another overtime frame will be played.

With under half to go in the frame, the Queens would take a tripping penalty on a Rustlers breakaway. The visiting Lakeland College would finally end the game with a goal on the powerplay with under a minute left to go. Lloydminster-native Madelyn Mann would fire it past Queens goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore (Bachelor of Science Pre-Opt) to take the lead and the win.

Both Mann and Disotell-Dunsmore were named player of the game for their respective teams. Disotell-Dunsmore stopped 19 of 20 shots and Mann scored the only goal of the game.

These two teams will face off in their third matchup against each other tomorrow night at 7 pm in Lloydminster.
