Fox shuts the door as Queens edge Rustlers
The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers and Red Deer Polytechnic Queens concluded their home and home affair on Saturday November 19th with the return game in Lloydminster. On Friday night, the Rustlers traveled into Red Deer and won a tight 1-0 game in double overtime on the strength of a power play goal by Madelyn Mann.
The first period would start out slow as both teams came off the double overtime game last night. The Queens would take a minor penalty at the 4:30 mark and successfully kill off the power play for the Rustlers. Lakeland would take back to back minor penalties at the 11:51 and 12:30 mark. It did not take long for the Queens to capitalize on the five on three as Kiera Mulder scored from the point. Assists would go to Sarah Raymond and Avery Lajeunesse. The power play goal was scored at 12:49. That would be it in a quiet first period as the Queens outshot the Rustlers 5-2.
A back and forth second period provided a bit more jump for the Queens and Rustlers. Back and forth chances were blocked by goaltenders Madison Fox for the Queens and Chantel Weller for the Rustlers. Lakeland killed off one minor penalty late in the second period. Shots on goal were 6-5 in favor of the Queens.
An exciting third period would generate some offence. The Rustlers would strike first with Laiken Swan scoring top shelf as she exited the corner. The lead would be short lived as Jailyn Bablitz would score the game winning goal with 8:30 left in the third period to pull the Queens ahead 2-1. Lakeland would get a power play with 5:10 left as Natalie Buttle took a double minor penalty, but Madison Fox shut the door on the power play. Shots on goal were 14-7 in the third period for the Rustlers and 21-18 overall for Lakeland.
Players of the game for Red Deer was Jailyn Bablitz and for Lakeland was Laiken Swan. The Rustlers return to action next weekend for a two game trip south to face the Olds College Broncos. The Queens have next weekend off from ACAC action.
