The Queens start the semester with back-to-back wins
Red Deer, January 13, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Hockey team faced off with the SAIT Trojans tonight after coming off their best win of the season so far, knocking off the NAIT Ooks 4-1, who were undefeated. For the Trojans, this is their first game of the season and are currently riding a three-game losing streak with a 2-5 record on the year.
Defence Julie Wagner (Bachelor of Science) would open up the scoring on her team's second of the game after she jumped on a loose puck in the slot that was blocked to begin with. Arilyn Toews and Molly Flynn, both Bachelor of Science in Nursing student-athletes, got the assists on Wagner's first goal of the season. At the end of the first period, the Trojans were down 1-0 but outshot the home team 8-6.
The Queens would extend their lead in the second period with a goal by Natalie Buttle (Bachelor of Kinesiology), which was her first of the season and her second point. Defence Kaedence Mollin (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) took a shot from the blueline and Buttle was able to get some wood on the puck and tip it past the Trojans goaltender. Forward Madison Sansom (Social Work) got the second assist on the goal that ultimately was the game winning goal.
Nearing the end of the second period, the Queens were looking like they were going to skate off to the third period with a 2-0 lead but with under a minute left to play the Trojans cut their lead in half. Forward Mikayla Loewen (Open Studies) fought around the Queens net and ultimately was able to find the back of the net.
But later on in the third period, the Queens would extend their lead with a goal by forward Avery Lajeunnesse (Bachelor of Education in Elementary).
The players of the game went to Natalie Buttle of the Queens, who scored the winning goal, and Mikayla Loewen of the Trojans, who scored their lone goal.
These two teams will face off tomorrow in Calgary. Note the start time at 7:45 at the Winsport Arena B.
