Dojahn back stops Rustlers to shutout over Trojans.
The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers kicked off their second semester of ACAC action with a home series against the SAIT Trojans out of Calgary. Game one was played on Friday January 20th with the Rustlers coming out on top 1-0
The first period saw the Rustlers come flying out of the gates. Having played three exhibition games over the last two weekends, the Rustlers were anxious for some ACAC action. They controlled a large amount of the play in period one, outshooting the Trojans 20-6. The teams split a pair of minor penalties to Paris Appel for Lakeland and Nikita Schmidt for SAIT. With just under three minutes remaining in period one, Hailey Carothers hammered a puck from the top of the left circle. Assists went to Olivia Mann and Madelyn Mann on the play. The goal was scored at the 17:51 of the period.
The second period was a little bit of a slower pace with both teams generating chances on Mackenzie Dojahn for Lakeland and Ali Kieren for SAIT. Both goalies stood tall in their respective creases. A pair of minor penalties to Hailey Carothers and Kaylee Hill were successfully killed off by Lakeland. Shots on goal for the second period were 8-5 for Lakeland and 28-11 overall for Lakeland.
The third period was a physical affair as SAIT played aggressively for the tying goal. Lakeland got into penalty trouble early in period three as Mackenzie Stafford and Mykayla Pylypow took penalties twenty-one seconds apart. The Rustlers killed off the two man advantage. SAIT took a penalty with seven minutes left. Reauna Blight was called for body contact but the Trojans killed off the Rustlers man advantage. SAIT had one last power play opportunity as Janay Williams took a goalie interference penalty with 3:53 remaining on the clock. The Rustlers killed off the penalty and skated away to a tight 1-0 victory.
Players of the game were the two goalies who played stellar games in their nets. Mackenzie Dojahn posted the 18 save shutout while Ali Kieren stopped 41 of 42 shots for the Trojans. Next action is back at the Russ Robertson Arena on Saturday January 21st with a 2pm puck drop.
