Bablitz nets winner as Queens defeat Rustlers
The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers and Red Deer Polytechnic Queens faced off in the first game of a home and home series over Friday February 3rd and Saturday February 4th weekend. The Queens would skate to a 3-2 shootout win over the Rustlers.
The first period was a back and forth affair. Rustlers forward Hailey Carothers continued her torrid scoring pace, opening things up at 7:13 on the power play. Assists went to Laiken Swan and Janay Williams. The Queens would respond five minutes later as Alli Soyko would knot things up at 1-1. Soyko would score with assists going to Arilyn Toews and Kaedence Mollin. Both goalies were busy as the Rustlers outshot the Queens 13-11.
The second period would start efficiently for the Queens. At 16:18, Madison Sansom would stake the Queens to a 2-1 lead. Assists would go to Natalie Buttle and Alli Soyko. The Rustlers would square things up at 6:14 as Carothers would score her second of the game. Primary assist would go to Kalea Sauder and the teams would enter the third period at two a piece. Shots on goal in period two were 14-10 for the Queens and they would carry a 25-23 advantage into the third period.
The third period would be a quieter period for the two goalies. Both teams played a tight game and did not give up much for shots. Red Deer held a 7-2 advantage and both teams would head to overtime. In the first overtime, forward Asha Petrie for Lakeland was assessed a minor penalty for roughing with 2:12 left on the clock. Goaltender Chantel Weller came up big, making a number of point blank stops in tight on the Queens. The teams would head to double overtime where Lakeland had a glorious chance at three on three. Hailey Carothers was sent in on a breakaway but Izzy Palumbo for the Queens made a great pad stop. Shots on goal after regulation were 40-32 for Red Deer.
In the shootout, Hailey Carothers would shoot first for Lakeland and be stopped. Natalie Buttle would go in for Red Deer and beat Weller on the backhand. Laiken Swan would be the second shooter for Lakeland and be stopped by Palumbo. Brenna Reid would be stopped by Weller as Red Deer maintained a 1-0 lead. Olivia Mann would be the last chance for the Rustlers and she made a glorious move to beat Palumbo to knot things at 1-1. Red Deer's last shooter, Jailyn Bablitz, would end the game as she beat Weller on a nifty play.
Player of the game for the Queens was Alli Soyko while Chantel Weller took player of the game honors for the Rustlers. The back end of the home and home series goes Saturday night in Red Deer with puck drop at 7:00pm.
