Three goal second period leads Ooks over Rustlers, clinches #1 seed

The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers and NAIT Ooks battled in the last home and home series of the regular season The Rustlers know they are locked into the #3 seed for the first round of playoffs while the Ooks are battling the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens for the #1 seed and a first round match up with the Olds College Broncos.

 

The Rustlers would open the scoring with just over five minutes gone in the first period. Hailey Carothers would one time a back door feed to beat Ooks goaltender Sidney McMullan to stake the Rustlers to a 1-0 lead. Assists would go to Kylie Perry and Kennedy Taylor. The Ooks would kill off two man advantages that the Rustlers had with minor penalties going to Bre Martin and Payton Basterash. The Rustlers took a minor penalty with Laiken Swan drawing a hooking penalty the Ooks were unable to take advantage of. Shots on goal were 15-7 for the Rustlers. 

 

In period 2, the Ooks dictated the puck possession in the Rustlers end and capitalized on their chances. With 11:44 left in period two, the Ooks would strike with Sierra Meroniuk beating Rustlers goalie Chantel Weller. Assists would go to Darby Robertson and Julianne Crozier. Just three minutes later, the Ooks would take their first lead of the game as Charlieze Sallis would beat Weller to the glove hand. Bre Martin and Hannah Prinsen would draw the assists and the Ooks would lead 2-1. Just eleven seconds later, the Ooks would beat Weller in the Rustlers net. Darby Robertson would capitalize on a chance high in the slot, assists would go to Cheyenna Harden and Sierra Meroniuk. The Rustlers would call a timeout and chase goaltender Chantel Weller as she was replaced by Mackenzie Dojahn. Shots on goal were 13-5 for NAIT in the period and 20-20 overall for the game. 

 

The third period was an even battle for the Ooks and Rustlers. Both teams would get into some penalty trouble as the Ooks and Rustlers each took two minor penalties and split a coincidental minor penalty assessment. The Ooks would strike with 2:39 on the clock as Bre Martin would score to ice the game, assists going to Michaella Kibblewhite and Charlieze Sallis. Shots on goal for the third period were 10-8 for NAIT and 30-28 overall for the Ooks. Player of the game for the Rustlers was Mykayla Pylypow and Sierra Meroniuk for the Ooks. 

 

Both teams will play on Saturday March 4th before gearing up for playoffs. With the win, the Ooks clinch the #1 seed and will play the #4 Olds College Broncos. The Rustlers will tangle with the #2 Red Deer Polytechnic Queens.
