Broncos battle back for shootout win over Queens

The Olds College Broncos battled back from an early two-goal deficit to take down the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens 3-2 in a shootout at the Town of Olds Sportsplex on Thursday.

Jesse Jack had a goal and an assist for the Broncos (7-7-5), good enough to share player of the game honours with Lacey Friesen, who turned in a sparkling 45-save performance. Ireland Greenhough also had a goal and an assist for Olds College, with Dani Corrigan picking up the shootout winner.

For the Queens (13-4-2), Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore made 25 saves in a losing effort. Offensively, Jordyn McLaughlin opened the scoring 1:02 into the game as she found a loose puck off a Kyla Hansel shot from the point. Queens player of the Game Madison Sansom doubled the lead shortly thereafter, the beneficiary of a Broncos defensive turnover as she skated in and fired the puck past Friesen to put Red Deer up two through 20 minutes.

The Broncos found their legs midway through the second period, cutting the lead in half when Ali Macaulay intercepted a Queens clearing attempt, then found Greenhough in the slot as she beat Disotell-Dunsmore with 7:04 left in the period. Olds College then found the equalizer with 1:25 left in the frame as Jack intercepted another Queens clearing attempt, then fired a slapshot that got through traffic and past Disotell-Dunsmore to get the Broncos back to level footing through 40 minutes, with neither team scoring again thereafter.

The Broncos and Queens will complete their regular season schedules in Red Deer at 7 p.m. tomorrow night.
