Robertson three point afternoon leads Rustlers to sweep of Trojans
The Lakeland College Apex Automation Rustlers and the SAIT Trojans tangled in a Sunday afternoon matinee to conclude their three-game series in Lloydminster. The Rustlers were looking to continue their weekend momentum after back-to-back wins over the Trojans while SAIT was looking to go back to Calgary with one victory under their belt.
The Rustlers started things fast, scoring 1:39 into the game as Hailey Carothers converted a pass from Austyn Eaton to give the Rustlers an early lead. The Rustlers took a penalty and the Trojans made them pay, cashing in on the advantage. Just over six minutes into the period, Jessa Brewer beat goaltender Mackenzie Dojahn on the power play to tie things up. The Rustlers would respond with two quick goals as Claudia Lammers and Paris Appel. Lammer's goal was assisted by Calla Kampen and Ella Wingert. Appel's goal was assisted by Darby Robertson and Hailey Carothers. Shots on goal were 16-9 in favour of Lakeland.
The second period saw the Trojans come out aggressively and they took advantage of some Rustlers' plays as they scored two goals just over three minutes apart. At 16:03, Tamryn Ward would cut the lead to 3-2 as she scored on a two-on-one to beat Dojahn upstairs. At 13:56, Ward would capitalize again on a Rustlers turnover and beat Dojahn to tie the game. The Rustlers would add a late goal with 5:42 left in period 2. Calla Kampen let a shot go from the off-wing and beat Madison Fox up high. Assists would go to Madelyn Mann and Keyra Buziak. The Rustlers would take a 4-3 lead into the final frame. Shots on goal for the 2nd period were 18-7 for the Rustlers and 34-16 overall after two periods.
In the final frame, Lakeland would add two insurance markers to close out the game. At the 4:36 mark, Darby Robertson would score to increase the Rustlers' lead to two. Robertson would score from the slot and assists would go to Kaylee Hill and Paris Appel. Robertson would close out the scoring in the game, adding her second of the game to make it a 6-3 final. Ella Wingert would draw the lone assist on the scoring play. Final third-period shots were 9-6 for Lakeland and 43-22 overall in the game. Players of the game were Sydney Hollman for SAIT and Darby Robertson for Lakeland.
