Short handed goal from Wingert helps Rustlers sweep Broncos
The Lakeland College Apex Automation Rustlers and Olds College Broncos squared off for game two of their doubleheader weekend in Lloydminster. The Rustlers were looking to extend their winning streak to four games to kick off the regular season. The Broncos were looking to bounce back from a 4-0 defeat to the Rustlers on Friday evening. Starting goalies for Olds was Lacey Friesen and for Lakeland was Mackenzie Gould-Sharpe. The Rustlers skated to a 3-2 win on Saturday over the Broncos.
The first period was a penalty filled affair with both teams taking minor penalties and coincidental penalties throughout the period. The Rustlers were able to kill off three minor penalties in the period while Lakeland was able to cash in on one of the four Olds College Broncos penalties taken in the period. Keyra Buziak would score a power play goal with an assist going to Julianna Giacobbo. The goal was scored with 7:14 left in period one. Shots on goal were 13-7 for Lakeland.
The second period was more quiet and there were not as many penalties. With play moving more to 5 on 5, a number of quality chances were generated on Friesen and Gould-Sharpe. The Rustlers would extend their lead to 2-0 as Janay Williams let go a shot from the top of the circle and beat Friesen high to the glove side. Secondary assists were given to Giacobbo and Darby Robertson. The Broncos would cut the lead in half late in the second period as Jerika Pashniak would score on a Gould-Sharpe rebound with 3:14 left in the period. Tessa Knisely would draw the lone assist on the play. Shots on goal were 16-7 for the Rustlers in the period.
The final period was a fast paced period as Olds looked to push and tie the game while Lakeland was trying to extend the lead to two. On a short handed opportunity, Ella Wingert cashed a rebound from a Mackenzie Stafford shot just under three minutes into the period. The Broncos would strike back just under two minutes later as Brogan Carlson cashed in on a goalmouth scramble Tessa Knisely and Avery Kendall would assist on the goal and the Broncos trailed Lakeland 3-2 with 15:50 to play. The Broncos were unable to get the tying goal and the Rustlers would get the three points and 3-2 win.
Players of the game were Ella Wingert for Lakeland and Tessa Knisely for Olds. The Rustlers head south to Calgary for a three game road trip to play the SAIT Trojans beginning on Friday October 25th.
