OLDS- The Olds College Broncos, host of the 2017 North Star Sports ACAC Women's Soccer Championship, couldn't solve the tight defense of the Grande Prairie Regional College Wolves, losing 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Normie Kwong Field.
With the win, GPRC advances to the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon where they will take on SAIT.
Alexi Watson, Ashtyn Haycock and Alex Verhun all found twine on Friday afternoon, helping the Wolves advance to their second semi-final in as many seasons.
The Wolves drew first blood nineteen minutes into the contest. After back and fourth play early in, the Wolves finally drew a corner kick to the right side of keeper Auslin McDaniel-Perrin. The ball was sent into a sea of bodies before somehow finding its way behind McDaniel-Perrin to give the Wolves the early lead.
While Grande Prairie controlled the rest of the first half, the Broncos went into the second well within striking distance just one back.
However, the Wolves quickly deflated the Bronco faithful's hopes early in the second, as a poor team effort on defense led to an open shot from Ashtyn Haycock. Haycock would beat McDaniel-Perrin to lift the Wolves lead to two.
In the final minute of action, Alex Verhun broke in with the ball past the defense and made a slick shot to seal the deal for the visiting Wolves, clinching their spot in Saturday's semi-final.
The Wolves will challenge the top seed in the Southern Divison on Saturday, the 9-1 SAIT Trojans.
