Talerico tabs nerves as Trojans fall in season opener

CALGARY, ALTA., (Sept. 8, 2019) — The season did not start the way the SAIT Trojans women's soccer team would have wanted.

The Trojans gave a up goal late in the first half, and one just seconds into the second half, as they fell 2-1 to the visiting Olds College Broncos in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) contest played Sunday afternoon at Cohos Commons Field.

"We were a very nervous group – especially in the first half," said Trojans head coach John Talerico. "We had moments we did well. We just didn't connect the way we should be."

SAIT falls to 0-1 on the season. Olds College picked up their second win of the weekend to move to 2-0.

Katharina Oeltermann scored in the first half for the Broncos, while Cass Haynes scored the game-winner right after halftime. SAIT's Mackenzie Georgsen countered for the home side. Both Oeltermann and Georgsen earned Player of the Game nods for their respective teams.

The Trojans have quite a few new faces from last year's team that went all the way to the ACAC championship game, where they fell 2-1 in overtime to the NAIT Ooks.

Gone are names that accounted for 47 of their team's 57 goals on the season.

"We do have a lot of turnover, but we have a lot of good, quality skill out there," Talerico stated. "We had chances, but we rushed things a bit, and that was to be expected."

SAIT will now put this game behind them, and focus on next weekend, where they will play a pair of road games – Friday afternoon against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings, and Sunday against the host Red Deer College Queens.
