Semi Final Women's Match Red Deer & Concordia
In a crucial semi final matchup on October 26th, the Concordia University of Edmonton faced off against Red Deer Polytechnic at Hanson Field in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Temperature to start the game was a brisk 5 degrees Celsius. Concordia got the scoring started in the 12th minute with a goal by #7 Angelina Saporito, Assist by #10 Vanessa Pietramala. Concordia came within inches of doubling their lead in the 39th minute with a shot off the post. The first half saw Concordia control play with smothering defence largely containing the Red Deer attack to midfield. Red Deer had a handful of unsuccessful breakout attempts as their best chances to get on the board in the first half.
The 2nd half had a complete reversal with Red Deer applying constant pressure on attack. In the 52nd minute Red Deer appeared to have tied the game until the goal was disallowed for an offside. Both teams traded scoring chances in the 58th minute as Concordia was stopped on a sharp angle attempt followed by a near breakaway chance by Red Deer a minute later. In the 66th minute Red Deer got past the Concordia defence for a 1 on 1 scoring chance stopped by the goalkeeper. Concordia just missed a chance to take a stranglehold on the game putting one off the crossbar in the 71st minute. In the 75th minute a desperation slide tackle by the Concordia goalkeeper kept Red Deer off the board. A chaotic sequence in the 85th minute saw several chances for Concordia to seal the game. In the final minutes Red Deer had several subs enter the game in an attempt to spark a comeback with fresh legs.
Concordia held on for a narrow 1-0 victory thanks to a sensational performance by Goalkeeper and player of the game Madison Kempster. Player of the game for Red Deer # 15 Payton Erick.
