SAIT Trojans vs NAIT Ooks: Women’s Soccer Semifinal
Oct. 25, 2025 – The SAIT Trojans and NAIT Ooks squared off in a defensive showdown in the ACAC semifinal, with both teams determined to punch their ticket to the championship match. From the opening whistle, offensive aggression was matched by structured defensive play on both ends of the pitch. SAIT goalkeeper Erin Mergen (fifth year, Calgary, Alta.) and NAIT's keeper Carly Speelman (third year, Edmonton, Alta.) stole the spotlight early, turning aside multiple close-range opportunities to keep the match scoreless. Midfield pressure created frequent turnovers and quick transitions, but neither side could convert their momentum into a lead. After a tightly contested 45 minutes, the teams headed into the break deadlocked at 0–0.
NAIT came out strong to start the second half, increasing their speed and intensity in the attacking zone. Their breakthrough came in the 52nd minute when #9 Jyla Micael Erandio (first year, Edmonton, Alta.) capitalized on an opportunity in tight to put the Ooks ahead 1–0. The goal injected energy into both sides as SAIT pushed back quickly, generating a handful of dangerous attempts. However, Speelman continued to anchor the Ooks' defence, making several key saves to preserve the advantage.
As time ticked down, the midfield became a battleground of tackles, interceptions and rapid counterattacks, with neither team willing to give an inch. SAIT worked tirelessly to create an equalizer, but NAIT's back line stood firm, disrupting passing lanes and clearing threats before they reached the net. With a disciplined defensive effort and the lone goal from Erandio holding up, the Ooks secured the tight 1–0 victory. NAIT advances to the championship final, while SAIT's strong tournament run comes to a close after a well-fought semifinal battle.
