Huskies Home Opener
Before more than 200 fans at the Syncrude Sport & Wellness Centre's Canadian National Resources Ltd. Gymnasium, the host Keyano College Huskies women's volleyball team played their 2018-2019 Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference home opener against the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings from Camrose.
The Vikings, coming into the Friday match-up undefeated, would claim their third straight match of the early season by edging the Huskies 20-25, 16-25, 20-25.
Huskies' Player of the Game was Alexa Ellis (5th year, setter, Art & Design, Nanaimo, B.C.) with 17 assists, four kills and four digs. Fort McMurray's Alex Whelan, a graduate of Father Patrick Mercredi Community High School, led the Huskies with nine kills to go along with three blocks.
Huskies rookie Faith Grant (1st year, left side, College Prep, Warren, Ohio) showed promise with four kills and a block.
Vikings' Player of the Game Rebecca Petrie (4th year, middle, Physical Education, Tomahawk, AB) had a team-high 10 kills to go along with three digs and three blocks.
Vikings had 31 kills compared to 30 for the Huskies.
It was at the net that the Vikings dominated with 15 blocks to the Huskies seven.
