Lions Rebound with Straight-Sets Win Over Kodiaks
One night after a stunning 4-set defeat to the 6th place Kodiaks, the Lions bounced back and won Saturday night's game in a dominant three sets. Player of the Game for Ambrose was 4th year leftside Julia Kemper (8 kills, 5 aces, 15 digs), while the Kodiaks POG was 2nd year setter Jamie Brown (14 assists, 19 digs, 2 blocks).
The Lions were in control soon after the match began, taking an 11-5 lead behind a service run from Makayla Beisal (5 kills, 7 digs). Tough serving was the Lions' bread and butter this game, as Julia Kemper brought her team to a 19-10 lead with a serve run of her own. The Kodiaks refused to give up, putting up tremendous defensive effort to claw their way back into the game. Down 24-17, Kodiak blocking and defense, led by middle Laura Serafini (7 kills, 2 blocks) became impenetrable and took the visitors on a 5-0 run to force a Lions timeout. The comeback was cut short when a swing from Kemper careened off the Lethbridge blocks and out, ending the set 25-22.
After the first set scare, the Lions re-established control over the game and went on an 11-3 run for an 18-13 lead in the second set. Offense from Willow Lewington (7 kills, 4 blocks) and Mady Kerr (9 kills, 4 digs) made sure the Kodiaks didn't pull off another comeback, and the set ended 25-19 with another Kemper kill off the block.
In the third set it was Mady Kerr's turn for a long run of serves, leading the home team to a 14-6 lead. Nothing was going to keep the Lions from a win at this point, and the Lions cruised to a 25-12 victory after a kill from Lewington.
After tonight's win, the Lions sit in a close second place ahead of SAIT. The Lions will enjoy a well-earned bye next weekend, but face Briercrest at home on February 15-16.
