WVB | Kodiaks Fall Short in Home Opener
Oct. 18, 2019 - The Lethbridge College Kodiaks began their season with a home-and-home series against the Sait Trojans. The Kodiaks opened up the series in Lethbridge where nerves got the best of them as they dropped their first match to the Trojans.
While nerves may have set in for some Lethbridge athletes, first year Kylie Morrison was completely prepared to play her first regular season match as a Kodiak. Morrison confidently took an offensive charge on the court with a total of 13 kills and digs, encouraging her teammates to follow her lead.
The Kodiaks had a slow start in the first set as they trailed behind by eight points, however they were able to gain some momentum midway through the set, closing in on the SAIT Trojans. While Lethbridge made a solid effort to catch up to their opponents, SAIT maintained their lead leaving them with a final score of 25-21 in set one.
First year, Kylie Morrison of Lethbridge was pivotal in the second set as she brought an aggressive energy to the squad. With five kills in set two, she was able to keep her team's spirits high while closing in on the Trojan's lead. However, it was not enough as the Trojans defended their stamina from the first set while finishing the second set with another win.
The Kodiaks came into the third set determined to steal the lead from SAIT. Lethbridge was ahead by six, showing no signs of slowing down. This forced their opponents head coach, Art O'Dwyer to call a timeout with a score of 19-9 in an effort to stop Lethbridge. This timeout was inefficient to the Trojans as they could not regain their strength which allowed the Kodiaks to earn their first victorious set of the night.
Lethbridge continued to remain a powerful force as the match moved into the fourth set. However, SAIT kept the gap within the score minimal, eventually jumping ahead of Lethbridge. The Trojans then found a wave of points and rode to victory as ten of the last twelve points belonged to SAIT. Trojans, Jayden Leong, was a crucial asset to SAIT's win as she earned 25 total kills therefore receiving player of the game.
The Kodiaks dropped the first match in this home-and-home series. While there were plenty of positives to celebrate, Lethbridge will also look to make some adjustments as they anticipate another close game at SAIT.
