WVB | Kodiaks Will Look for a Second Chance Tomorrow Against Queens
Nov. 22, 2019 - The Lethbridge College Kodiaks women's team looked to end a four-game losing streak as they hosted the Red Deer College Queens for a pair of games this weekend. The Kodiaks began the season 2-2, but have fallen to 2-6 and sit in fifth in the ACAC south division. The team is just four points back of the division's final playoff spot.
The Kodiaks fell short tonight against the Queens. While the match looked promising for Lethbridge after the first set, things quickly changed as Red Deer adjusted and attacked, earning the next three sets. The Kodiaks host the Queens again tomorrow in this back to back series where they will be looking for vengeance.
As the game was underway, both teams fought to find a comfortable lead. It wasn't until halfway through the first set that the Kodiaks took a three point lead to sneak ahead of the Queens. Red Deer's head coach Talbot Walton was forced into calling a timeout in an attempt to keep his team ahead of the Kodiaks. However, this proved ineffective as Lethbridge remained in the lead closing out the first set with a score of 25-21. Third year, Jamie Brown of Lethbridge held great composure throughout set one to keep her team focused, ultimately earning them the set.
As the game moved into the second set, Lethbridge struggled to maintain their composure from the first set. Red Deer came out with a little more grit in which they found an early lead urging Kodiaks head coach, Anna Schwark to call a timeout. Kodiak's Maile Funa was solid in the second set as she knocked in four kills and was reliable in the wall when called upon. However, the Queens finished up the second set with authority at 25-18.
Fourth year, Erin Neufeldt of Red Deer earned herself six kills in the third set which helped her team to another successful set at 25-15. With two victorious sets it seemed as though the Queens had found their footing. Red Deer stormed into the fourth set finding themselves on a tear. The kills were evenly distributed amongst the Queens players.
Mack Lewicki was an absolute force for the Kodiaks throughout the entire match as she earned eight kills, 14 digs and two assists. Meanwhile, Kodiak's Maile Funa was named player of the match for her consistent hard work, while Erin Neufeldt had 10 digs and 13 kills earning herself player of the match.
